Journalism in a Global Context

A network of African and European journalism students, professors and media representatives

The international project Journalism in a Global Context aims to create a network of African and European journalism students, professors and media representatives. Within this network, migration reporting on both continents in particular is to be further developed and professionalized.

The project began in 2015 with a conference in Dortmund. This was followed by international conferences in Addis Ababa (2015), Nairobi (2016) and the “Media and Migration Spring School” in Dakar (2018), which brought together 27 journalists from 20 African and European nations to jointly develop ideas for sustainable reporting on displacement and migration.

Previously, students from the Institute of Journalism produced contributions for an online platform together with budding journalists from Ethiopia, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2016. The multimedia productions aim to move away from a Eurocentric view of global refugee movements and intend to capture the reality of African migrants' lives with consideration and intercultural sensitivity.

In addition, a study in 2016 examined reporting on the growing migration from African countries to Europe. While Western media coverage of migration from Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan has already been scientifically investigated and the media portrayal of refugees is increasingly being reflected upon, this comparative analysis of media coverage of migrants from African countries to Europe is a new approach. A total of six European and five African media were analyzed for the study. (To the results)

Journalism in a Global Context is carried out by the Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism in cooperation with the Africa Positive association. Another partner is the African Media Initiative. The project is funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung; in an earlier project phase, the Federal Foreign Office provided funding.
