Media Accountability in Transition

Supporting media change in Egypt and Tunisia in fall 2012

The Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism supported the media transition in Egypt and Tunisia in the fall of 2012 with the “Media Accountability in Transition” project. The project was financed by the German Federal Foreign Office and is part of the official German-Egyptian and German-Tunisian transformation partnership.

Since the Arab Spring, the framework conditions for media and journalists in the Arab world have undergone radical change. Seminars in Cairo and Tunis aimed to promote independent, critical and professional reporting on the ground and to encourage media representatives to defend their newfound media freedom. Senior editors and influential media professionals discussed the potential of independent media self-regulation: What contribution can ombudsmen make to strengthening trust in the media? How can codes of ethics and independent press councils influence journalistic quality?
